Popcorn by Ben Elton PDF Print E-mail

“Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?”

Ben Elton's 'Popcorn' is a fast, funny, and stylish exploration into the power of the media and society's refusal to take responsibility for its actions. Oscar winner Bruce Delamitri is a director of ultra-violent but stylish movies. The morning after his big win should be rife with celebration and sex. Unfortunately for Bruce and his family, the notorious Mall Murderers have different plans. Plans that will have consequences reaching far beyond any of Bruce's wildest dreams. Or worst nightmares.

Contains coarse language, sexual references and drug use.

Performances – 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 September and 2, 3 October (no performance Sunday 13 September)

Murder at Checkmate Manor (A Farndale Production) PDF Print E-mail

Centenary Theatre Group, in conjunction with the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society are putting on a play together …. 14 November - 5 December

Mrs. Reece, the Guild’s President and Spokeswoman, takes up the story …..

We are, I believe, unique among Townswomen’s Guilds in having our very own Dramatic Society.  We have staged many productions over the years and have never been afraid to set ourselves steep challenges.  We tread the boards other societies fear to tread!  Find out more by clicking on ‘Previous Productions’.

You may like to know that we are currently in rehearsal for our latest extravaganza entitled MURDER AT CHECKMATE MANOR by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr.  It is quite good really and shows that dear old Agatha Christie should have stuck to writing books as it’s much better than The Mousetrap.  We have, as is customary, added a few touches of our own to improve the script a bit and, because it’s a tad short, we are going to incorporate our annual fashion show into the proceedings!

You’d probably like to know a bit about the plot, but as it’s a thriller, it would rather give the game away, wouldn’t it?  Suffice it to say that there will be lots of mounting, tension and excitement as Inspector O’Reilly tries to identify the mass murderer among the family at Checkmate Manor.

The cast are currently being put through their paces by director Eric Scott.  Unfortunately Reverend Reg Bishop was unable to direct as usual this year following an unfortunate incident when he tried to ride his bicycle without a saddle.  He’s since been defrocked.  However, we are grateful to Mr. Scott, for stepping into the breach.

Hopefully, Gordon Pugh will be bringing his new digital camera to take some photos of rehearsals which will we post on this page of the website, once I’ve learned how to put them on. .

Oh, and we have to say at this point—because it says so on our licence—that this is an amateur production (not that you’ll be able to tell) by arrangement with those lovely people at Samuel French Ltd.
